Welcome to AskBetter ("we", "our", or "us"), available at askbetter.co.uk. We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our prompt enhancement service.

2. Information We Collect

Account and usage data

  • Account information (email, name) provided through Clerk authentication
  • Prompts you submit and the enhanced prompts we generate, stored in our database
  • Usage statistics (e.g. daily prompt counts and token usage)
  • Template usage events if you use our template features

Automatically collected information

  • IP address and approximate location (via our hosting and analytics providers)
  • Browser type, device type, and operating system
  • Pages visited and interactions on the site (if you consent to analytics cookies)
  • Referring website addresses

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and maintain our prompt enhancement service
  • To authenticate you and manage your account
  • To process your prompts using AI (including content moderation checks)
  • To enforce usage limits and protect the service from abuse

4. Legal Bases for Processing (UK/EU)

Where UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, we rely on the following legal bases:

  • Contract — to provide the service you signed up for (account management, prompt enhancement, storing your history)
  • Legitimate interests — to keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and maintain basic operational logs, balanced against your rights
  • Consent — for non-essential cookies and analytics, where you can accept or reject via our cookie banner

5. AI Processing & OpenAI

When you use AskBetter, the text you submit is sent to OpenAI (a US-based provider) for prompt enhancement and content moderation. We do not use your prompts to train our own models.

OpenAI processes data according to its own policies. We recommend reviewing OpenAI's Privacy Policy to understand how they handle API data. Do not submit sensitive personal data in prompts unless you are comfortable with this processing.

6. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate AskBetter:

  • Clerk — authentication and user account management
  • Convex — database and backend services (stores prompts and usage data)
  • OpenAI — AI-powered prompt enhancement and moderation
  • Vercel — website hosting
  • Vercel Analytics — privacy-focused website analytics (with consent)
  • Vercel Speed Insights — performance monitoring (with consent)
  • PostHog — product analytics for understanding feature usage and growth (EU-hosted, with consent)
  • CookieYes — cookie consent management and cookie policy display

These providers may process data in the United States or other countries outside your own. Where required, they use appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses for international transfers.

7. Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies for essential functionality (e.g. authentication and consent preferences) and, with your consent, for analytics. You can manage your preferences through our cookie consent banner or your browser settings. For details, see our Cookie Policy.

8. Your Rights (UK/EU GDPR)

If you are in the UK or EU, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Rectify inaccurate data

  • Go to Settings in the dashboard to manage or delete your account
  • Delete individual prompts from History or Favourites in your dashboard

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. In the UK, this is the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights including the right to know what personal information is collected and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell your personal information.

10. Data Retention

  • Prompt history — automatically removed from your active history after 7 days (soft-deleted). You can also delete prompts manually at any time.
  • Account data — retained while your account is active. When you delete your Clerk account, we remove your user record from our database.
  • Usage statistics — retained in aggregated daily form for rate limiting and service operation.

11. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. Data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored with our cloud providers. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.

12. Children

AskBetter is not intended for users under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date above.
